在面對兩年前為什麼如此多投資者進入加密資產市場時， Angela Walch 這麼說。在主流社會的廣袤大陸之外，存在著這樣一個加密的小島，在世界分崩離析時充當著 safe haven 的角色。但正如這段話出現的那篇《華盛頓郵報》的標題，“As cryptocurrency goes wild, fear grows about who might get hurt”，wild 與 hurt 是一體兩面，而在這篇文章發出來的兩年內大大小小的加密劇場，也充分證明了有關 “Get hurt” 的恐懼並非無根據。
我們為何而來到這裡？這既是直覺性的也是理論性的。在理論推演層面，Angela 等來自學界的聲音提供了非常有價值的思考資源。Angela Walch 是前 St.Mary’s University 的法律教授，同時在 UCL 區塊鏈技術中心任職，擔任美國參議院銀行委員會的顧問。她撰寫了大量與加密技術的社會影響有關的學術論文，也活躍在與法律、監管、治理等有關的行業議題的前沿。作為一名研究經驗豐富的學者，她將許多” 外部權力結構 “（即政治、經濟、法律、環境等）的過往研究資源和研究視角帶到了加密領域。她相對近期、也是影響較大的論述有：

其中，第一篇論文系統梳理了 ”Decentralization” / “Decentralized”（作為形容詞）的概念小史，提出了對去中心化緣起的分析、用法環境和性質釐清，在第三部分甚至分析了比特幣和以太坊的權力集中案例，較為全面地從不同方面闡明了這個流動的、卻又作為區塊鏈基石的概念。
流動的概念也能作為基石嗎？#
在 Deconstructing ‘Decentralization’: Exploring the Core Claim of Crypto Systems 這篇論文中，Angela 首先從三個方面分析了去中心化的使用場景：
首先，用於描述計算機（通常稱為 “節點”）網絡：
計算機之間的 p2p 連接網絡
節點的地理分布
強大的復原力
此外，還可以描述權力或機構如何在無許可區塊鏈系統中運作：

無許可也意味著無單一法律責任方
在原文中，Angela 這樣形容 “完全去中心化”：
完全去中心化（無論這意味著什麼）被視為無權限區塊鏈系統的終極目標之一，是一個有待擴展的烏托邦。
第一個場景是從計算機物理層面描述去中心化，第二個場景則是從抽象的（並且政治的）層面上描述去中心湖。而 Angela 分析結束後表示，在去中心化這個詞裡，政治和物理含義在主流用法中已經融合。
對去中心化這個概念在行業內的最初使用進行溯源是必要的。Angela 將 Director Hinman 在 2018 年一次演講中對 “去中心化” 的使用作為行業內部這個詞語的概念根系，在她的總結中，Director Hinman 也是從兩個方面去界定去中心化：其一是物理上的分散網絡，其二必須要難以確定、或者難以” 看到 “在系統中起決定性作用的中心方。即，這是一種對特定區塊鏈系統中的運作方式的界定，並且重心放在是否有更被系統偏重的參與方。
Veil of decentralization#
沒有一個人能夠界定一個詞語的概念，因為所有人都在使用語言。從這個角度講，“去中心化” 這個概念是被所有使用它的人去中心化地界定的。語言是最終的權力表徵，是歷史塑造的共識；語義的壟斷可能比 51% 攻擊更難。Angela 從幾個角度嘗試去” 圍攻 “去中心化這個詞的概念邊界，概括如下：
1）沒有任何人知道去中心化意味著什麼；
2）中本聰沒有發明去中心化；

互聯網早期的回聲；

19 年以前的關於數字治理的文獻 [1]
3）去中心化不等於分布式；

去中心化：由不同方面控制
-
分布式：並行化，但仍可能依賴中央協調者
4）去中心化存在於一定範圍內（有限定）；
5）去中心化是動態而非靜態的、理想的而非現實的；
- 系統分散程度的波動性
The critical takeaway here is that any measurement of decentralization is obsolete immediately after it has been calculated. In a permissionless system, anyone can join, and no one has to stay, so the system’s composition is, in theory, always in flux.
“這裡的重要啟示是，任何去中心化的衡量標準在計算出來後會立即過時。在無許可系統中，任何人都可以加入，也沒有任何人必須留下。因此，從理論上講，系統的構成總是處於變化之中。”
6）去中心化可被用來隱藏權力或促成破壞規則的行為。
在此，Angela 將去中心化稱作是 “Veil of Decentralization”，一個去中心化的 “面紗”。這層面紗與 “corporate veil” 相對，但公司面紗無法遮蔽的是一個必須負責任的法人主體或責任方，而在去中心化面紗的遮蔽下，這面紗底下空空如也。去中心化的結構等量地將責任也稀釋了，沒有任何人能夠在這個結構中承擔更高層級的任務，也因而，“Law has no reason to reach into such a system, as there is no relevant human behavior to direct”——法律從這個體系中找不到任何可以行使的觸手，這個體系太滑了，抓不住任何相關的人類行為作為被行使的客體。
未經審慎使用、沒有釐清概念的 “Decentralization”，對於認識區塊鏈的權力結構是具有相當誤導作用的。論文中，Angela 給出了很多個區塊鏈系統中存在著權力集中的案例，以及少數幾個重要更新都是由一小群核心協調者推動進行的等等實際情況（論文第三部分），通過比特幣及以太坊區塊鏈歷史上的真實案例，對於大眾對 “去中心化” 的偏向絕對化、浪漫化的、非理性印象進行了糾正。
在 Closing Reflections 之前的最後一段，Angela 寫道：
My argument is that unquestioning use of the term ‘decentralized’ and the romanticization of ‘decentralization’ helps to create, sustain, and spread false beliefs about blockchain power structures. In other words, the Veil of Decentralization strikes again.
我的論點是，不加質疑地使用 "去中心化" 一詞以及將 "去中心化" 浪漫化，會幫助製造、維持和傳播關於區塊鏈權力結構的錯誤信念。換句話說，我們又看到了去中心化的面紗。
